I know firsthand how journaling can impact your life and there is goo gobs of research to support it. This prompted me to create a self-coaching process called “Journaling into Action”. This process blends journaling (writing), visioning (looking inward to see what you want for the future) and goal setting to assist you with self-awareness, living a life of intention and taking action.
How can journaling help? People often think of journaling as diary style writing that is used to keep track of your daily activities. This is ONE style of journaling, but it is not the ONLY way to journal. Journaling is more than just writing words. It is embracing your thoughts and ideas and turning them into something that can inspire you to learn, think and act differently.
Recording and reflecting on your thoughts and feelings can actually help you manage, plan and live your life purposefully. As we move through life, things are coming at us fast and furious. Our minds are in a constant whirlwind of thought. It is almost impossible to direct our thoughts and actions without stopping and taking time to record what needs to be done or what should happen next. I use journaling as a proactive approach to dealing with life. The idea is not to just let life happen to you, but to take time to plan what you would like life to bring you. Writing your words on paper frees the brain and heart of the constant inflow of thoughts and feelings. Once you have done this, you will begin to have a clearer sense of things. Utilizing journaling techniques and exercises enable you to use writing as a tool for self-empowerment and awareness and to become your own visionary. It doesn’t require special skill, just a willingness to write and act.
Visioning is looking inward to determine what you want for the future. It’s like thinking with your heart. Often times I find that individuals struggle with determining what they truly want out for their lives. The visioning process helps you to get in touch with the dream that lives within your heart and translate it to real life. Visioning begins by embracing your deepest desire and capturing those desires on paper with words and images. The visioning process can manifest itself in the form of vision boards, vision statements and affirmations. We become what we focus on and by using visioning to focus on what you want for your future you can create a guideline for the experiences you want to have and the life you want to live.
By applying the journaling into action process you can find your inner vision and consciously design your own life. Not only will you be better prepared to move forward in life, but you’ll be able to face challenges and obstacles knowing that you have a true life focus and a vision to keep you on track.
It has been my personal experience that using visioning and a variety of journaling exercises can connect your life experiences with thought patterns and execute ideas into reality. My hope is that as you work through the journaling into action process it will give you the inspiration to think, act and move forward to success.
